Ambassadors

Lisa Balerna

Lisa Balerna

Lisa is our local hero! You can catch her on the local duathlon scene, the SJAM parkway, or in Gatineau Park. A regular on the Somersault series as an athlete and a volunteer, Lisa is first to lend a hand and often first in her age group. She’s consistently top female in the Championship Series and even placed 3rd in her age group at World Duathlon Championships a few years ago.

Lisa was our very first ambassador and we’re happy to have her on the team for our 3rd consecutive year!

Marc Prud'homme

Marc Prud'homme

Marc is a long-time friends of the velofix team and we’re happy to have him as an ambassador. He’s an amazing triathlete, with an ever better story of perseverance and dedication. You’ll often find Marc at local events, and volunteering at the velofix van. Be sure to come say hi and meet him. Despite his strong build and competitiveness on race day – you’ll be hard-pressed to find someone as approachable, supportive, and inspirational as Marc.

Marc served Canada as an infantry within the Royal Canadian Regiment for the last 12 year. Although his military career is very important to him, he has the perfect balance between, work, training, friends and family life.

Three years ago, he was lucky enough to survive a bicycle crash that almost took his life. After a successful shoulder reconstructive surgery, and many other difficulties, Marc became stronger and faster than every. He’s looking to qualify for the 2017 World Military Games, the Ironman 70.3 World Championships, Olympic Distance World Championships, and hopes to one day compete at the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii.

Tamsin

Cycling to work on the coldest day of the year, finishing my first cyclocross race, riding up to the top of the Tourmalet in France – these are all things I never knew I could do until I tried. I love that feeling of accomplishment when you train consistently and hit your goals. When I am out for a long bike ride, a training run or a skinny ski in the Gatineau hills, I am living my best life.

I regularly race and participate in many local events including Ride of the Damned, Ottawa Race Weekend, Rideau Lakes Cycle Tour, Meech Lake Tri, the Gatineau Fat Bike Loppet and the Perth Cyclosportif. Velofix is a key part of my ability to keep training and racing. They keep my bikes tuned up and ready to roll and are always there to answer questions. I am proud to be able to support Velofix in return as an ambassador.

Catch me on Strava, Twitter and Instagram @tamsinmelissa.

Matt

Our newest member to the team! Matt and Adam have been riding together for a while and have always been close friends. Over the past years, Matt has been a big supporter of velofix. We’re glad to have Matt officially join the team this year as a Lead Mechanic.

As a DH rider, Matt’s often found riding at Camp Fortune, MSM, or building his own course in the Fallingbrook Falls. He also travels to BC quite often for cycling trips with his riding buddies. With his strong passion for anything on 2 wheels, Matt can keep you in race-ready condition!

Adam Kourakis

Adam Kourakis

Adam Kourakis is a long time bike-guy and cycling enthusiast. When he’s not wrenching, he’s out riding, doing local races, touring, or kicking back and surfing his favorite cycling websites. A familiar face to anyone who cycles in the East end, down Frank Kenny Road, or along the Parkway, Adam is a proven professional.

With this experience and intoxicating enthusiasm, you’ll look forward to every visit from velofix Ottawa. As a Kinesiology graduate, Shimano Certified Technician, Trek Ninja, Winterborne Certified Pro Mechanic, and customer service specialist – Adam has all the tools needed to get you back on your bike.

Sean

Sean

Hailing from England, Sean spent the better part of two decades chasing winter across hemispheres, ultimately splitting his time between British Columbia and Australia as a professional ski instructor, before arriving in Ottawa in 2009. Shifting gears to a single winter season meant an opportunity to sink his teeth into an off-snow sport, and cycling was a perfect match. Soon, Gatineau Park was a year-round playground. It wasn’t long before he was working on his wife’s tri rig, their other bikes and wrenching for friends, ultimately becoming a Winterbourne Certified Professional Bicycle Mechanic,

Years teaching the love of skiing has helped Sean hone his excellent customer service skills, which make him a welcome addition to the velofix Ottawa Team.

Tire Width on Road Bikes

If you haven’t noticed, road tires are getting wider! You may have some riding buddies that swapped out their tires, or you may have made the swap yourself. Long gone are the days where 23, 21 or 19mm tires ruled the road. Most bikes are coming stock with 25mm, if not wider.   If you’re not familiar with the benefits of a wider tire, hold onto your saddle and read on.   First off, some people… Read More

  • Are eligible to win individual and team prizes
  • Have fun by creating a workplace team and engaging in friendly competition
  • Have access to free tools and resources
  • Save money (if they hop out of their car)
  • Turn their commute into a daily workout

Bike to Work Month, an EnviroCentre initiative, is made possible with the support of local businesses, sponsors and our partnership with the City of Ottawa.

How it works

From there, you will be able to:

  • Log your bike commutes during the month of May
  • Track your progress and see the positive impact you are making
  • Learn how much money you have saved and pollution you have averted

During May, we also conduct random draws and give away over $10,000 in individual and team prizes.

This event is a must-do for anyone who likes rolling hills, a scenic ride, a well-supported ride and a bit of gravel. The course is just over 100km and is a mix of paved and hard-packed gravel through rural Quebec cities, just North of Ottawa.
